I just moved here from San Francisco, and am afraid to surrender my priceless hair to a scary new salon.  I am hoping that fellow yelpers can help me find a place where the stylists listen to you and give you a great cut instead of snooting all over you.  Maybe I'm dreaming too big, but does anyone know where to get a good, sophisticated but youthful cut in the city for under $75?

I go to Jackie who used to be at Kropps n Bobbers in the LES...she just opened her own salon a block away from there.  They charge me $75 for the cut...so you might wanna check it out!

I am obsessed with my hair dresser, which I found through a friend.  The haircut is only about $45, but you would have to make a short trip to New Hyde Park (border of Queens.)  You could walk there from the train station.  Would you be interested?  The salon is called Avreen and is on Jericho Turnpike and her name is Yolanda.  She is the only person who has ever done what I asked since as long as I could remember.

Masae at Seven Salon is so awesome!  Thats on 7th between Pine and Pike.  She listens to what you want done and does it.  I know she does fantastic work because I use to work with her as the front desk desk agent and every single cut/color she did was just so awesome.  check her out!  I believe it's $50 for a women' cut... : )

I did a review on Sassy Fashions and they cut both men and women hair.  I think it's about $45 - $50.  Check them out, they're on 7th Ave. between 29th & 30th.  Ask for Luis or Joe, they're excellent.

not sure if this is what you are looking for, but there are many places in nyc that have training nights at top salons that offer cuts at a fraction of the price but still offers quality.  i have tried bumble and bumble, which I think is ok, but i have been meaning to try some of these other places out.

Just be a model for Bumble & bumble! Go to their W. 13th St. salon Monday nights between 5:30-6:30 to sign up. I've done it three times and have never been disappointed with my cut! All "students" are seasoned professionals, many in the industry for 10+ years or owners of their own salons, but simply learning the Bumble & bumble technique. Depending on the cuts they have available, it usually takes between 3 weeks-2 months to get your appt, but it's well worth it...I mean, it's free!

Other than lying about my incopious locks at B&B or trucking up to the UES, are there any recommended places for us guys?  My mane is nearing bouffant proportions and I'm getting a little desperate.  Extra points if it's in or around Hell's Kitchen.

Again, I can only suggest the salon I go to, which is unisex.  I've recommended a lot of people to it and they've had excellent results.  Doesn't hurt to check it out although it's Midtown West.

Can anyone recommend a good colorist for blondes to go to for highlights? I'm also new in town, and having a really hard time swallowing the concept of shelling out $200 for highlights alone. EGADS! Somebody save me, please?

At Rose's suggestion, I checked out Sassy Fashion.  The jury is still out on the results, but initial reactions have been quite good.  And it was only twenty-one bucks.

I go to G Concepts on Avenue U in Brooklyn (footsteps from the Q train stop at Avenue U)

I got my hair cut, styled, and blown out there on Thursday for $20 -- and i've gotten tons of compliments on it. My mom has her highlights done there for like $70, and i had the japanenese straightening done last year for half of what my friends paid anywhere else

Call up G-Concepts, say you are a friend of Aly -- I'm sure they'll take great care of you. I'm sorta a regular. Ok, a stalker.

If you have Spanish hair or Jewish/Semitic hair, and need a cheap, good blow-out, definintely hit Hairmatics. There are two locations--I go to the one on 207 and Broadway. Depending on the length of your hair, if you go between Mon and Thursday, your blow-out will cost you less than 20 bucks and for all you Jewish gals, you won't walk out with "jair." Don't go there for a hair cut or color, tho...LOL. I speak from experience.

08/14/2006 Nancy C. says:

That's right, Ben, just egg it on! LOL.
But seriously, those of you (present company INCLUDED) who have been the victims of Jair know the importance of a good blow-out done by someone who knows how to do a blow-out on thick, coarse hair, ie Jewish hair...or perhaps its more politically correct to say semitic hair.
One time, I went to what I call a "white people hair salon" downtown ...one of those cheap walk-in chains that look all fancy with a french name. They SWORE up and down they could do a blow-out on my thick, kinky, nappy hair. I kid you not...the girl came at me with a flat paddle brush and commenced to drag down the TOP (using caps in lieu of italics here) of my head (ie the crown) and then aim the hair dryer at it. What? No. Everyone one knows that a blow-out is done with a round brush and that you start from the nape and work your way up to the crown. Puh-lease. And no, this wasn't an isolated incident. The same thing happened to me in Albany (but at least that guy used a round brush...).
So, that is all I'm saying.

Oh, Jessica! It's definintely a blood thing, much to my chagrin. Though my Puerto Rican fiance loves it. Go figure. I had straight hair until the summer between 5th and 6th grade, and then it just went BOING.

Well, Nancy, I'm Jewish, too, and my hair has a soft wave but definitely not what you describe as Jair.  Frankly, I've never heard that word before, and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  Of all the Jewish people I know, there are only maybe three guys with thick, kinky, nappy hair.  One of them describes his hair as a Jewfro, but the whole thing must have escaped my notice.

08/15/2006 Nancy C. says:

Guess it must be a generational thing, 'cuz where I come from, jair and jewfro are terms that get thrown around regularly.
Here's a little quote from the NYT "A Night Out With..." Column:
"Neither Lauren seemed titillated, so they went downstairs, where they began sizing up prospects, for sport as much as anything. "She's got jair," Ms. Blitzer said of one. ("Jewish hair - dark, thick hair that's been obviously straightened," she explained.)" (If you want to read the whole thing, e-mail for the link)

Anywaaaaaay, I need to go read the latest issue of Heeb. Check you all later.
